KANDIL

Kandil is a glass with an accelerometer controlled light. Aim was to experiment an interactive bed side glass by using Arduino.

Kandil is an experimental prototype to learn and explore microcontrollers, sensors and Arduino. It has an USB output in order to hack the Arduino codes to explore new and different usage scenarios. With written three different Arduino codes, kandil can be used as bed-side glass, tea light, mood light and party glass. With new code, it is open to new possibilities. IN DEPTH

I have started this project as a bed side glass with lighting feature. Although it was not a smart idea, I have found making a glass with sensor and a lighting feature highly challenging. It was worth to try and learn.

 

I kept working to experiment Arduino coding, microcontrollers and creating tiny, detailed product enclosures. I also knew that it could turn into a many different

useful forms; tea light, mood light and

party glass.

Using Arduino and designing it as hackable and recodable brought a lot of new possibilities and different usage scenarios.

 

This was the initial scenario which is failed;

 

When the user wakes up and needs to drink water, he/she turns the glass. When the glass flips over, it lights up, thanks to the accelerometer which is positioned at the bottom of glass. Once the LEDs under the glass light up, it becomes easier for the user to pour water from a carafe in the dark. It turns off when the glass is turned upside down.

 

It is failed because the light which is directly comes to user's eyes causes to lose sleep. More importantly idea of bringing two different products into a single object failed. I guess having a torch and a glass separately on desk works better. Anyway, the aim was to experiment and learn Arduino.

  • 1 Adafruit Pro Trinket Lilon/LiPoly Battery Backpack
  • 1 Adafruit MMA8451 Accelerometer
  • 1 Slide Switch
  • 1/8" clear acrylic
  • Translucent filament for 3d print
  • Glue

 

 

Tools:

 

  • Makerbot Replicator 2
  • Soldering iron
  • Wire
